About Sugar and the Designer, Heidi Brueggeman

Sugar is now based in two adorable seaside towns, Beaufort, South Carolina and Newport, Rhode Island!

Sugar was founded in 2003 by designer Heidi Brueggeman in Newport, Rhode Island.  Heidi was inspired by the colors available in semi-precious stones, but she could not find the jewelry she wanted to wear. 

Heidi named the company Sugar because sparkling colorful gemstones are even better than candy.  She is inspired by color, texture, vintage pieces, and serendipitous composition that occurs by happenstance in the chaos of her studio.  Many pieces are one of a kind, although inspiration overlaps from season to season in color and composition.  Currently, all pieces are designed and made by Heidi Brueggeman, with the exception of the rings (designed by Heidi, made in Jaipur). 

Since 2003 Heidi has had an online presence with ShopSugar.com. Outfitting wholesale accounts such as boutiques and galleries, as well as special trunk shows, has allowed Sugar to maintain very loyal retail clients.  Sugar has been featured in publications such as Lucky, NYLON, and Teen Vogue.

Heidi grew up outside of Cleveland, Ohio and graduated from The Andrews School with a concentration in fine arts and science.  In 1998 Heidi received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Elon College in North Carolina.  She has experience in fashion and business as a buyer, stylist, personal shopper, antiques & vintage dealer, and shop owner.
